About

What this corpus is, what is served here, and how to cite it

What this is

A corpus of Coptic and Ancient Egyptian texts with three layers of each Coptic text — the witness as its edition has it, a Cairene standardization (Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar) and a Kemetic rendering in the Kemetic alphabet — together with the grammar and orthography rulings the layers are generated from, the OCR models that read the printed editions, and guides for learners and teachers.

Every layer is produced by code from the one above it; every rule is a function with cited test cases; every text carries its source edition, corpus id, licence and dialect in its own header. Nothing on this site is typed by hand from memory.

What is here and what is not

10,001 of 12,280 witness documents (L0 + L0-ocr) are share-safe, and 22,227 of 25,140 catalogue rows (one per layer file, every layer) — those are served here (the TLA sentence corpora only as derived layers). The others stay on the machine that holds them. A reading room for the restricted texts, behind a login with each source's terms, is planned and waits for the permission replies (ruling G1-4, 2026-09-28).

How to cite

Every text page prints its own citation line: the L0 source edition with its licence and attribution, then the derived layers.

Kemetic project (Yousef Hanna). Coptic · Cairene · Kemetic corpus, build of 2026-10-11, 10,019 texts served openly. Texts under their own licences as printed on each page.

A domain name and a persistent identifier (DOI per release) are decisions still open.

Fonts and design

The design is the project's Fourth Style (design/THEME.md): the plaster room by day, the Nile-evening room at night — the switch is in the footer. KemeticSerif is the project's own face (SIL OFL), served from this site.
