| 4 | 424. The Intef whom we have called the third, appears in |
| 5 | no other monuments which can be identified as his, because |
| 6 | we do not know his other names. He can hardly be the |
| 7 | same as the preceding Intef II, from whom he is separated |
| 8 | by Mentuhotep I. He was obliged to give way to another |
| 9 | member of the family, Mentuhotep II, who permitted him |
| 10 | to reign as a vassal. |
| 11 | 425. The most important of Mentuhotep IT’s monuments? |
| 12 | is the relief on the rocks at Shatt er-Regil, near Assuan,® |
| 13 | where, accompanied by his mother, a lady not of royal |
| 14 | lineage, he receives the homage of this vassal, King Intef, |
| 15 | who is ushered into the royal presence by Mentuhotep |
| 16 | Ⲡⲉ chief treasurer, Kheti. This Kheti was an important |
| 17 | officer, who appears again on the rocks near Assuan in the |
| 18 | presence of Mentuhotep II, with the following inscrip- |
| 19 | tion:® |
| 20 | 426. Year 41,9 under (the majesty of) Nibkhrure (Nb-prw-R<), |

| 34 | § 426] RELIEFS NEAR ASSUAN 207 |
| 35 | This was doubtless an expedition against the Nubians of |
| 36 | Wawat. Mentuhotep II's inscriptions are elsewhere not |
| 37 | infrequent, but contain only a word or two, chiefly his titles. |
| 38 | His appearance on the monuments of later generations is |
| 39 | such as to show that he was regarded as the first great king |

What the layers are
The text as its witness or edition has it, original spelling; its dialect is a description and is never standardized.
For Egyptian texts: the transliteration with the editors' marks turned into the symbols ° * < > _ ^ (ruled 2026-09-10). For papyri: the edition's Leiden marks as the same symbols, and the editors' readings beside the scribe's as ‹scribe→editors› (ruled PAP-3).
Standardized Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar, generated by code from the layer above under the rulings of the project.
The Kemetic alphabet, generated by code from L1.
Quoted translations where they exist, credited; otherwise model drafts, marked as drafts.
