14:16ⲉⲓⲧⲁ ϩⲙⲡⲉⲟⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲁϥϭⲙϭⲟⲙ ⲛϭⲓⲡⲉⲓⲥⲱⲛⲧ ⲛϣⲁϥⲧ ⲉⲩⲁⲣⲉϩ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲛⲑⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ϩⲙⲡⲟⲩⲉϩⲥⲁϩⲛⲉ ⲛⲛⲧⲩⲣⲁⲛⲛⲟⲥ ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱϣⲧ ⲛⲙⲙⲟⲩⲛϭ ⲛϭⲓϫThus in process of time an ungodly custom grown strong was kept as a law, and graven images were worshipped by the commandments of kings.
14:17ⲛⲕⲉⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲟⲩⲏⲟⲩ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲙⲡⲟⲩⲉϣⲧⲁⲓⲟⲟⲩ ⲙⲡⲉⲩⲙⲧⲟ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲁⲩϥⲓⲡⲧⲟⲛⲧⲛ ⲙⲫⲟ ⲉⲧⲟⲩⲏⲟⲩ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲁⲩⲧⲁⲙⲓⲉⲟⲩϩⲓⲕⲱⲛ ⲉⲛⲉⲥⲱⲥ ⲙⲡⲣⲣⲟ ⲉⲩⲧⲁⲉⲓⲟ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉⲩⲉⲣⲁⲧⲟⲟⲧⲟⲩ ⲉⲕⲱⲣϣ ⲉⲡⲉⲧⲟⲩⲏⲩ ⲛⲑⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲁ ⲉϥϩⲁⲧⲏⲩWhom men could not honour in presence, because they dwelt far off, they took the counterfeit of his visage from far, and made an express image of a king whom they honoured, to the end that by this their forwardness they might flatter him that was absent, as if he were present.
14:18ⲁⲩⲱ ⲧⲙⲛⲧⲣⲉϥⲧⲱⲣⲉ ⲙⲡⲣⲉϥⲣⲉⲓⲟⲡⲉ ⲁⲥⲥⲉⲕ ⲛⲕⲟⲟⲩⲉ ⲉⲩⲟⲛⲁⲧⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲙⲛⲛⲥⲱⲥ ⲉϣⲙϣⲉ ⲛⲁϥ ⲉⲩⲙⲏⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗAlso the singular diligence of the artificer did help to set forward the ignorant to more superstition.
14:19ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉϥⲟⲩⲉϣⲁⲣⲉⲥⲕⲉ ⲙⲡⲣⲣⲟ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲅⲁⲣ ϩⲛⲧⲉϥⲧⲉⲭⲛⲏ ⲁϥⲙⲟⲛⲕϥ ⲁϥⲧⲁⲙⲓⲟϥ ⲉⲛⲉⲥⲱϥ ⲉϩⲟⲩ[ⲟ ⲙⲡ]ⲉϥⲉⲓⲛⲉFor he, peradventure willing to please one in authority, forced all his skill to make the resemblance of the best fashion.
14:20ⲡⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲉⲩⲥⲱⲕ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲉⲧⲃⲉⲫⲱⲃ ⲉⲧⲛⲉⲥⲱϥ ⲛϯⲟⲡⲉ ⲡⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲛⲧⲁⲩⲧⲁⲙⲓⲟϥ ϩⲁⲑⲏ ⲛⲟⲩⲕⲟⲩⲓ ⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩ ⲁⲩⲙⲉⲉⲩⲉ ϫⲉⲟⲩⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲡⲉAnd so the multitude, allured by the grace of the work, took him now for a god, which a little before was but honoured.
14:21ⲁⲡⲁⲓ ϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲉⲩϭⲟⲣϭⲥ ϩⲙⲡⲉⲩⲱⲛϩ ϫⲉⲛⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲛⲧⲁⲩⲣϩⲙϩⲁⲗ ⲙⲫⲏⲃⲉ ⲛⲛⲣⲱⲟⲩ ⲡⲣⲁⲛ ⲉⲛϣⲟⲩⲧⲁⲁϥ ⲁⲛ ⲉϭⲉ ⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲁⲩⲧⲁⲁϥ ⲉϩⲉⲛⲱⲛⲉ ⲙⲛϩⲉⲛϣⲉAnd this was an occasion to deceive the world: for men, serving either calamity or tyranny, did ascribe unto stones and stocks the incommunicable name.
14:22ⲉⲓⲧⲁ ⲙⲡϥⲣⲱϣⲉ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲥⲱⲣⲙ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲙⲡϣⲟϫⲛⲉ ⲙⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲁⲩⲣⲡⲕⲉⲱⲛϩ ϩⲛⲟⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲙⲡⲟⲗⲉⲙⲟⲥ ⲙⲙⲛⲧⲁⲧⲥⲟⲟⲩⲛ ⲛⲉⲉⲓⲡⲉⲑⲟⲟⲩ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ⲥⲉⲙⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲉⲣⲟⲟⲩ ϫⲉϯⲣⲏⲛⲏMoreover this was not enough for them, that they erred in the knowledge of God; but whereas they lived in the great war of ignorance, those so great plagues called they peace.
14:23ⲏ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲥⲉϣⲱⲱⲧ ⲛⲛⲉⲩϣⲏⲣⲉ ϩⲛⲛⲉⲩⲙⲁ ⲏ ⲥⲉⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲛϩⲉⲛⲙⲩⲥⲧⲏⲣⲓⲟⲛ ⲉⲩϩⲏⲡ ⲏ ⲉⲩⲟ ⲛϣⲟⲉⲓⲧ ϩⲛϩⲉⲛⲙⲁ ⲛⲥⲱⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛϩⲉⲛⲕⲉⲥⲱⲛⲧ ⲉⲩϣⲟⲃⲉFor whilst they slew their children in sacrifices, or used secret ceremonies, or made revellings of strange rites;

What the layers are

L0 witness
The text as its witness or edition has it, original spelling; its dialect is a description and is never standardized.
L0.5 transliteration
For Egyptian texts: the transliteration with the editors' marks turned into the symbols ° * < > _ ^ (ruled 2026-09-10). For papyri: the edition's Leiden marks as the same symbols, and the editors' readings beside the scribe's as ‹scribe→editors› (ruled PAP-3).
L1 Cairene
Standardized Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar, generated by code from the layer above under the rulings of the project.
L2 Kemetic
The Kemetic alphabet, generated by code from L1.
English
Quoted translations where they exist, credited; otherwise model drafts, marked as drafts.
