1[I. ACROSTIC HYMN ON THE NATIVITY
2Paper. Four leaves (imperfect), 25 x 17 cm., from the first volume of the Difudr (No. xxxvii1 F). For the
3hand and style see Plate XVIII B (showing a leaf from the same Ms.).
4The text includes considerable fragments of a long Hymn on the Nativity (Khoiak 28-29), the second of
5two appointed for that festival.! It is to be chanted to the mode “Adam.” The hymn contained twenty-four
6stanzas, each beginning with a letter of the Greek Alphabet and divided into four lines or verses.? There is
7a caesura or pause in the middle of each line marked by the stop +. After each stanza follows a refrain (given
8at length after Stanza 1, but thereafter in abbreviated form).
9The substance of the Hymn is derived mainly from the First and Third Gospels, but in the seventh and
10following stanzas the author has introduced a notable apocryphal element,? asserting that Joseph was in-
11spired to enroll not only his own and the Virgin's name but also “the name of his son Jesus”’—before the
12Child was born.
13A fragment only of this Hymn (Stanzas 1-5, lacking the refrain) is found in the Rylands Difnar.*

341 Come all ye peoples of the earth today, behold this mystery, how unto us God is born of the Virgin
35without human seed, that He may save us.
36With the Angels let us praise Him in this holy, beavenly bymn : “Glory be to God on bigh, and peace on
37earth, and goodwill among men’ ; for He bath come and saved us.
382 Bethlehem of Judea, rejoice in exultation, for in thee hath arisen the Sun of Righteousness, even Jesus
39the Christ, the Word Which took flesh, Whom Mary bare being yet a maiden.
40With the Angels let us praise Him!
413 Every Scripture written, those things which the Prophets foretold touching the coming of the Christ,
42are fulfilled today in Bethlehem, the city of King David wherein He is born.
43With the Angels let us praise Him!
441 The first hymn is non-acrostic and less well preserved. 3 The source of this incident appears to be the Discourse

845 When there came forth a decree from the King that all the world should be enrolled,? that each should
85go to Bethlehem to write his name and his father’s name;
86With the Angels let us praise Him!
876 Straightway the righteous Joseph arose, he and Mary, the pure Virgin, and went to Bethlehem to write
88their names; the Virgin being with child with Our Savior.?
89With the Angels let us praise Him!
907 While the righteous Joseph was writing a mystery. . .in that (?) he wrote: ⲓ am Joseph, with Mary
91my wife, and my son Jesus.”
92With the Angels let us praise Him!
938 Assemble all ye today, behold this great marvel so amazing, in that he wrote his name and the name of
94the Virgin and (the name of) Jesus his son ere yet He was born.
95With the Angels let us praise Him!
96ⲟ Lo, the mystery! The Angel revealed it unto him touching the vision, which he uttered, and spake with
97Joseph: “Take unto thee thy wife; for He Whom she shall bear,—call Him Jesus.”
