1ⲃ. SAINTS PETER AND JOHN
2The Death and Assumption of the Virgin.
3Parchment. A complete leaf and six fragments from a single ⲙ.
4Frag. 1 (Cod. Tisch. XX1v, 4 is a complete leaf, 33 x 25 cm., containing the title of the work, set in a
5frame of elaborate interlaced work in red and yellow, and the opening of the narrative proper. At the foot of
6the page is the numeral pox, added by a later but ancient hand and indicating the position of this leaf in the
7volume in which the tract was bound up. At regular intervals in the right-hand border small rectangular
8spaces are reserved for an interrupted inscription. The first reads [ⲭ] the second numeral (?) being
9exceedingly doubtful; the second reads [ⲛ̄ⲧⲉ ⲙ︦ ] the third |voe|; the fourth is utterly illegible. The third
10must surely be a date—probably 375 ⲏ. the first should then be 601 and the second should read ⲛ̄ⲧⲉ Mp
11“of the Martyrs.” Both dates (if the first is rightly read) answer to g85/6 A.D., the presumed date of the ms.
12Frags. 2—5 (Cod. Tisch. xxv, 22, 31, 30, 23%) are the remains of two adjacent sheets in a quire (22 and 23
13are connected, as are 31 and 30; and the contents show that 23 follows 30). Frag. 6 (Cairo, no. 48. 1),
1423 ⲭ 19 cm., is the lower portion of a single leaf. Frag. 7 (id. no. 48. ii), 10.2 ⲭ ⲓⲟ ⲥⲓⲧ, is a mere fragment
15from the upper and inner corner of the last leaf of the work.*
16In all the Fragments the script (see Frontispiece) is a large, bold, but not altogether even uncial, identical
17with the script of Nos. xxi ⲥ and xxix (cp. Plate III A, B) and of Rylands Library Coptic Mss. no. 440,
18which Crum identifies with the hand of Hyvernat, Album xxx11. Spaces have been left for stops, but none
19have been inserted.
20The work to which these fragments belonged was a narrative of the Death and Assumption of the Virgin
21as related by Peter and John. Unlike the other Coptic accounts, therefore, it claims to be primary. Owing
22to the fragmentary condition of the work, it is difficult to judge what was its relation to the narrative of
23‘Evodius,” or the secondary account in the Discourse of Theodosius.® Narratives of the Death and Assumption
24attributed to Saint John are extant in Greek, Latin, Sahidic-Coptic, Syriac and Arabic,’ but with these our
25version seems only partially to have corresponded.
26Some particular points of interest may be noted. In Frag. 1 the appearance of Christ as a child accom-
27panied by the Innocents seems to be a feature otherwise unknown;” in Frags. 4-5 the blessings promised
28by Christ to those who shall honor the Virgin are peculiarly Coptic and appear in neither of the other
29versions ; but more important, perhaps, is Frag. 6 and the incident of the Jewish priest there recorded, since
30this seems to identify the large fragment published by Revillout® as a further portion of this work (though
31in a different dialect). It will be seen that the two slightly overlap, and that in both the punishment inflicted
32on this priest (loss of his arm, but not blindness) is the same.
33ⲓ This is shown (a) by the contents, 6) by the identity 5 For these see Lagarde, Aegyptiaca, pp. 38 ff. and

109the twenty-first day of Tobi, and her holy Assumpiion on the sixteenth day of Mesuré ; according as they were re-
110lated by Peter and John, the holy Apostles of Our Lord Jesus the Christ. In the Peace of God! Amen.
111While the Mother of God, Mary, was dwelling retired in her cell with ten holy virgins abiding with her,
112unto whom God was revealing great mysteries, it came to pass that, when the day of her repose, which
113was declared unto her by the Lord, was drawn near, in the night of the twentieth day of Tobi she beheld a
114vision. She called unto the virgins who were with her; and they came unto her and said: *“ What hath befallen

121Myself, that thou mayest rest for ever.” And I said unto Him: ‘What seek these little children who walk
122with Thee ?’ And He said unto me: ‘These are the little children whom Herod slew, at the time when thou
123didst bear Me into the world, thinking that he would find Me among them. For this cause do they walk

What the layers are

L0 witness
The text as its witness or edition has it, original spelling; its dialect is a description and is never standardized.
L0.5 transliteration
For Egyptian texts: the transliteration with the editors' marks turned into the symbols ° * < > _ ^ (ruled 2026-09-10). For papyri: the edition's Leiden marks as the same symbols, and the editors' readings beside the scribe's as ‹scribe→editors› (ruled PAP-3).
L1 Cairene
Standardized Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar, generated by code from the layer above under the rulings of the project.
L2 Kemetic
The Kemetic alphabet, generated by code from L1.
English
Quoted translations where they exist, credited; otherwise model drafts, marked as drafts.
