1D. THEODOSIUS
2The Death and Assumption of the Virgin.
3Parchment. Five leaves -ⲃ︦ -ⲙ︦, ⲙ︦ⲇ︦ ⲛ︦, -ⲝ (Cairo, no. 9, ⲟ i-ii1) from one Ms. of the Theodosian
4Dormitio Mariae, to which also belong two leaves at Manchester (Rylands Lib., Coptic no. 441) numbered
5-ⲛ︦ⲃ︦, -ⲛ︦ⲏ︦, and two leaves at Leipzig (Cod. Tisch. XXVI, 1; XXVII, 9), the latter unfoliated, the former
6numbered ⲝ︦ⲃ︦. These were recovered (from Ⲣⲉ Abi Makir) by Tattam and Tischendorf respectively.
7The numeration is by pages, so that -ⲛ︦, -ⲛ︦ⲃ︦ and -ⲛ︦ⲏ︦, 3, -ⲝ︦ⲃ︦ are adjacent leaves. Since -ⲛ̄, —3 form a
8single sheet, the quire must have contained at least six leaves (12 pp.).
9The leaves ⲛ︦, —3 measure 29.2 X 22 cm. ; -ⲏ︦ (slightly cropped) is 28.4 ⲭ 21 cm. ; the other two leaves
10having been robbed of their margins, measure 25.4 X 15 and 24.3 ⲭ 15 cm. The written column is
1122.5 X 12.5—-13 cm. For the hand,® which is rough and uneven, compare Plate X11, Hyv. Album, Plate xxx11,
12XLII, 4.
13The narrative portion of the work has been edited by Forbes Robinson* from the complete ms., brought
14likewise from Dér Abt Makar by Assemani, and now at Rome (Cod. Vat. Copt. LX1, 4). Below is given the
15full text of fo. --ⲃ containing the exordium of the homiletic introduction® (omitted by Robinson). A colla-
16tion of the remaining leaves with Robinson’s text is added.

19and Leipzig leaves was established by Crum: in style and hand and probably formed part of the same volume.

65“A Discourse which our thrice-blessed Father Abba Theodosius, the Archbishop of Rakoti and the Confessor?
66who put on Christ, delivered. And be delivered it touching the Assumption of the Lady of us all, the pure Mother
67of God, Mary, which is the sixteenth day of the month Mesoré ; beginning from the Dispensation of Christ unto
68the End of this Holy Virgin and ber pure Assumption. And he delivered this Discourse in his last year, wherein
69be was to fall asleep. In the Peace of God! Amen.
70Today is fulfilled the prophecy of the singer, David, which saith:? “They shall bring in unto the *King
71virgins behind her: they shall bring in unto him all her companions also.”
72Verily, O our Father the Prophet, there is a mystery in this saying. Thou sayest: “They shall bring in
73unto the King virgins,” implying a multitude; “behind her,” implying one: “they shall bring in unto her
74all her companions also.”
75Moreover he? saith: “Give me your devout attention and your heedful understanding, that the discourse
76may proceed without check. For today they bring in unto the King virgins, that is the virgin body of the
77Virgin and her very Soul, both together.”
781 Theodosius I, Patriarch of Alexandria 535-567 A.D., 2 Ps. XLv, 15.
79was banished by Justinian in 538 A.D. (see Hist. of the 3 ⲧ Theodosius.

What the layers are

L0 witness
The text as its witness or edition has it, original spelling; its dialect is a description and is never standardized.
L0.5 transliteration
For Egyptian texts: the transliteration with the editors' marks turned into the symbols ° * < > _ ^ (ruled 2026-09-10). For papyri: the edition's Leiden marks as the same symbols, and the editors' readings beside the scribe's as ‹scribe→editors› (ruled PAP-3).
L1 Cairene
Standardized Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar, generated by code from the layer above under the rulings of the project.
L2 Kemetic
The Kemetic alphabet, generated by code from L1.
English
Quoted translations where they exist, credited; otherwise model drafts, marked as drafts.
