1IX. THEODOSIUS
2Encomium on the Archangel Michael.
3Three fragments from as many different Mss,
4Frag. 1 (Cairo, no. 32), parchment, comprises two consecutive leaves (each 36 x 29.5 cm.) forming the
5central sheet in a quire. These are numbered -ⲏ︦, —i respectively.! The condition of the first leaf is
6extremely bad and reading is correspondingly difficult. The hand is a well-formed, medium-sized uncial,
7probably of the later tenth or eleventh century. No stops are visible. A vertical guide-line is ruled on the
8left of the column, and horizontal guide-lines at unequal intervals in the body of the text.
9The text corresponds only very generally with the published Bohairic version,” where the paragraphs are
10differently arranged, and is far nearer related to the Sahidic.® Hence it appears that there were at least
11two Bohairic recensions of this work.
12Frag. 2 (Cairo, no. 22) is a paper leaf, numbered -ⲕ︦ⲉ︦, and measuring 25 x 15 cm. (column,
1319 ⲭ 10.7 cm.). No stops are used. For the hand (Plate XXIV A) cp. Zoéga’s Class vir ⲡ. Xxx1, or better
14Brit. Mus. Or. no. 7021. The text, which is in the Sahidic dialect, corresponds generally but not exactly with
15the published Sahidic version.®
16Frag. 3 (Cairo, no. 324%%ii), parchment, is a fragment (14 Ⲭ 23 cm.) from a leaf with a written column
1717.5 cm. wide. The peculiar angular hand (see Plate X 8, ii) is the same as the hand of No. xxxv, Ⲉ. 3. The
18only stop used is -. The text corresponds generally with the published Bohairic version,” though here again
19the relation to the Sahidic is closer.?

69“...(They who are in Heaven hold festival because there hath been cast) out from them he who
70slandered (7) them—he who was the enemy of Him who created him. For this cause we (? they) hold festival
71in honor of the Archangel Michael, because it was he. ..who conquered and humbled the proud one. ..
72speedily. And when he had brought him low, he cast him forth... (lL. 4)... he came down and mastered him
73and bound him in chains which may not be loosed. Nor. ..did he leave him bound upon the earth; but it
74is written! concerning him that [he cast him into] the lake which is full of fire and (there) he is kept until
75the day of the Great Judgment. [For # he (the Devil) had remained] upon the earth no flesh would have
76escaped his evil. . .
77tBut thou wilt say unto me, friend: Ⲓ the Devil was bound, why, when the Angels of God stood in the
78presence of the Lord, as it is written in the Book of ⲟⲣ. (and) in what manner did he. . .and how did he
79bring evil upon Job, since he was bound?” He saith. ..
80*Harken and I [will inform thee. . .] Paul the. ..Apostle saith® “The servant of Satan buffeteth me...”
81Our good Savior spake (?) unto him saying: “Get thee behind me, Satan.”*
82But now we will not linger over this story (ⲟ) nor spend long time in speaking of him who hateth
83our race: ϯⲒⲉ what has been said suffice (?). Rather let us return unto the Conqueror, the honored wearer
84of the crown, the Archangel Michael, who hath prepared (7) for us today the glorious table of the great
85festival which is spread for us today in the heavens and upon the earth according to the commandment,
86our Lord Jesus the Christ Himself, (Who is) one God, and one Lord, and one Kingdom existent in the Holy
87Trinity which is consubstantial for ever.
88Now as for us, O my beloved, since we know how great a potentate is the great Archangel, let us rejoice
89with him whom God hath glorified; [let us} eat of the good things which the holy Archangel Michael hath
90prepared for us. But thou wilt say: “Since it is a royal banquet, it befits us to hold back until they
91are summoned before us, who are the nobles of the Palace of the King and of his Chief Captain Michael.
92Afterwards let us follow them.” (It is well spoken ; for) as was said above,

181ϫ my beloved, humility exalteth and guideth (aright). But arise ) and follow tme. Lo, the nobles have
182already gone in unto the banquet of Michael. . .
183These are the nobles who have already taken their places. Harken attentively and 1 will declare them
184unto you:—Adam and Abel, and Seth his son; Enoch, Methuselah, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and
185Joseph his son; Moses, Aaron, and Joshua the son of Nun; Gideon, Barak, Samson, and Jephthah; David
186the King, and Solomon his son, and Hezekiah, the righteous Kings; Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel,
187the Prophets; the Three Holy (Children), Elias and Elisha the great Prophets; Zacharias the Priest with
188John his son and the Twelve Apostles; Stephen the Archdeacon, the righteous old man, the Priest Simeon,
189and all the Martyrs.
190Why do | speak only of men of the earth ? Nay, there are the Lord of Sabaoth and the *whole host of
191Heaven. . .[But I] desire to return again unto the Palace of the holy Archangel Michael, unto the great ones

201say unto him: “Hail, my holy Father! Hail, Father of all mankind and of my holy Fathers who have been
202and who shall be.” If I give him these three greetings which befit his glory at this festival, doubtless he will
203cry out like a good father to his son: “Come, let us rejoice with thee today at this great festival.” And when
204Ⲓ find boldness of speech before him, I will ask him: “My lord Father, art thou not he whom God fashioned
205with His own hands, whom He filled with (the glory of) His likeness and His image ? Art thou not he
206whom God commanded, saying: ‘ Eat of the trees. ..””

What the layers are

L0 witness
The text as its witness or edition has it, original spelling; its dialect is a description and is never standardized.
L0.5 transliteration
For Egyptian texts: the transliteration with the editors' marks turned into the symbols ° * < > _ ^ (ruled 2026-09-10). For papyri: the edition's Leiden marks as the same symbols, and the editors' readings beside the scribe's as ‹scribe→editors› (ruled PAP-3).
L1 Cairene
Standardized Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar, generated by code from the layer above under the rulings of the project.
L2 Kemetic
The Kemetic alphabet, generated by code from L1.
English
Quoted translations where they exist, credited; otherwise model drafts, marked as drafts.
