1ⲭⲏ. ENCOMIUM ON THE THREE CHILDREN
2Parchment. Two leaves (Cairo, nos. 18, ⲓⲑ) from one Ms., measuring 29 xX 21 and 29.5 x 21 cm. No
3page or folio numbers are distinguishable. Large fragments have been torn off the upper right and lower left
4corners of the second leaf. Both are stained a deep brown, having apparently been soaked in oil, and when
5found were caked with mud. The hand is a good-sized uncial probably of the tenth or eleventh century. The
6only stop used is a high = (black ink).
7Other fragments of the same ms. are extant. (1) Two leaves (forming a single sheet), 29.5 x 23 cm., were
8in Sept. 1908 in the possession of a Spanish duke.! The first leaf begins: ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲣⲉϩ ⲉⲣⲱⲟⲩ .....]

12(ⲉⲣⲛⲏⲫⲓⲛ), he bade ⲙⲁⲛⲏ, his chief eunuch (cp. Dan. 1, 11), to bring him chosen royal youths from the
13Judaean captives. Thus were the Three Holy Children brought to him ; and Nebuchadnezzar rejoiced at their
14disposition and knowledge. He bade give them of the perfumed wine which he himself drank and of the royal
15food; but they decided not to eat of such meat. ..”’* In the second leaf (numbered on the verso A) the Devil
16urges the King to fashion his image ⲧⲉⲕϩⲓⲕⲱⲛ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲧⲉⲕⲥⲧⲩⲗⲏ) and set it up in the ⲕⲟⲓⲛⲏⲣⲁ ⲕⲟⲓ finpa

19to the new fragments see below.
20In our Frag. 1 the Three refuse to worship the image of the King, who in his anger orders their punishment.

23been directly followed by Cod. Tisch. xxvii, 6, which begins ⲉⲑⲣⲟⲩϩⲓⲧⲟⲩ ⲉ ⲑⲙⲏϯ i[tepw ⲛ̄ⲭⲣⲱⲙ ⲉⲑⲙⲟϩ.
24The following gloss incorporated in the text (verso ll. 16 ff.) may be quoted: ⲡⲓϫⲁϫⲓ ⲑⲱⲗ ⲉ̀ⲧⲉ ⲫⲁⲓ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲓⲧⲟϩ

26Frag. 2 deals with the death of the Three (Pashons 10) after receiving promise from God of the honors
27to be paid them after death. The text begins—(l. 8) ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ [ⲉⲑⲛⲁϣⲱⲡⲓ] ϧⲉⲛ ⲁⲛⲁⲅⲕⲏ [ⲛ̄ⲧⲟⲩ]ϫⲟⲥ [ϫⲉ]

29followed by slight fragments of four further lines. This leaf was immediately preceded by Cod. Tisch. xxvii,
305, which ends: se ⲛ̄ⲧⲉϥⲓ̄ⲣⲓ ⲛⲟⲩⲙⲉⲧⲛⲁⲏⲧ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛⲣⲁⲛ.
31The complete text is extant (Cod. Vai. Copt. Lx1X, 5 7). The volume to which these leaves belonged was
32perhaps deliberately discarded as a duplicate not worth repair,

What the layers are

L0 witness
The text as its witness or edition has it, original spelling; its dialect is a description and is never standardized.
L0.5 transliteration
For Egyptian texts: the transliteration with the editors' marks turned into the symbols ° * < > _ ^ (ruled 2026-09-10). For papyri: the edition's Leiden marks as the same symbols, and the editors' readings beside the scribe's as ‹scribe→editors› (ruled PAP-3).
L1 Cairene
Standardized Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar, generated by code from the layer above under the rulings of the project.
L2 Kemetic
The Kemetic alphabet, generated by code from L1.
English
Quoted translations where they exist, credited; otherwise model drafts, marked as drafts.
