1XVI. THE MARTYRDOM OF JUSTUS THE STRATELATES
2Parchment. Seven leaves or fragments from three mss. (1) Frag. 1 (Cod. Tisch. xx1v, 14%) is the upper
3half of an initial leaf, 21 x 25 cm., paged —&, containing the title (in the usual ornamented framing of cable-
4pattern) of the Martyrdoms of Justus, ⲣⲟ Theoclia, and Eusebius.? Frag. 2 (Cairo, no. 52), a leaf from
5which the outer edge has been torn, measures 31.2 cm. (complete height) x 18.8 cm. (actual width): the
6column is 18.8 cm. wide. The verso is headed iwc (center), as in Frag. 1. In both the hand is a large ⲅⲉ-
7shaped uncial, probably of the x century (see Plate X a). (2) Frags. 3-4 (Cod. Tisch. xx1v, 19, 20%) are
8two consecutive leaves, paged —png, --ⲣ︦ⲛ︦ⲇ︦. now measuring ⲭ 24 and 31 x 25 cm. respectively. The
9hand is a medium, rounded uncial (? late x or ⲭⲓ century): capital letters have dotted ornament (usually -:-)
10and flourishes: capital Ⲟ and € frequently occur in the body of the column. Stops (red), + or >. In the
11right margin of Frag. 3 recto is a drawing of a bird on a conventional spray. (3) Frag. 5 (Cod. Tisch. xxvi, 365),
1228 x 17 cm., though probably contemporary with Frags. 3-4, can hardly belong to the same ⲙs. differing
13as it does in size and style (e.g. stops have the form =): yet the use of capital O and € elsewhere than at
14the beginning of a paragraph may connect this with the foregoing two leaves. No page-number is visible.
15(4) Frags. 6-7. Two leaves (Cairo, no. 4), not consecutive’ but forming a single sheet, measure 28.5 x 21cm. : the
16column is 23 x 13 cm. There are no page- or folio-numbers. The hand is a thick square uncial, carefully formed
17(1x or x cent.) : the only stop used is -. These leaves (of which the second is the conclusion of the whole
18Discourse) cannot belong to the same Ms. as Frag. 5, since the two texts slightly overlap. The impress of an
19ornamental title-border on the verso of the second leaf shows that the Martyrdom of Justus was followed
20by another work (possibly the Martyrdom of Apoli) in the same volume. Palaeographically interesting is the
21cursive note (by a later hand) in the lower part of the same page (Plate XII B), where the peculiar Coptic
22letters are replaced by Greek equivalents. For another example of such transliteration cp. Crum, Coptic
23MSS. from the Fayyum, no. Ϫⲓ.
24Justus is commemorated® on Mechir (Amshir) 10. The saint was a magnate of Antioch,’ who greatly
25distinguished himself during the Persian Wars of Diocletian, taking prisoner Nicomedes the son of the Persian
26king (Frag. 1). The prince was entrusted to the charge of the Archbishop of Antioch, who perfidiously released
27him and swore falsely that the youth was dead.® For this cause Diocletian began to persecute the Christians.
28Justus was absent in Persia at the outbreak of the Persecution and returned to find his son Apoli a prisoner.
29Thereupon he headed a revolt against Diocletian, but was bidden by Christ, who appeared to him in a vision,
30to abandon his attempt and to demand of the King that he should be sent to Egypt to be martyred. Justus
31then freed his slaves and gave away his property (Frag. 2). As he demanded, he was sent to Egypt to Armenius
32the governor of Alexandria, who dispatched Justus to Arianus at Antinoé, his wife Theoclia to Sai (Sais,
33Sa), and his son Apoli to Pouasti (Bubastis).*?
34At Antinoé Arianus was with difficulty induced to torture so distinguished a person as Justus, but finally
35inflicted the usual series of torments (Frags. 3—4). After vainly attempting to bribe the martyr, he crushes
36him to death with a mill-stone, and when he is restored to life by the intervention of Christ, orders him to
37be beheaded (Frag. 5). The body of the martyr was recovered by a ‘faithful man’ who placed it in a martyrium
38in the village of ‘Tisi-djereht in -ⲁⲓ ⲓⲟ the south of Antinoé (Frags. 6-7).

40P.S.B.A., xxix, 291. - quire) intervened between the two leaves at Cairo.

269(Arianus cried out ) *“ Woe is me today more than all the princes of the earth. For the King is wroth with
270me and seeks to destroy my life. Therefore he hath sent unto me the great General that he may set fire to
271my city.”
272Then the multitudes returned and declared unto Justus everything which had come to pass. And when
273he heard, he had great compassion. Then he caused them to bring paper and ink and wrote unto him
274(Arianus) saying: Ⲓ am Justus, the least of all men. I swear unto thee by the high power of my Lord Jesus
275the Christ that no harm shall happen unto thee if thou shalt deal with me according to the command of
276Diocletian the King.”
277So they took the letter and sought for him (sc. Arianus). They found him in a bakery, and gave him the
278letter. Now when he had read it, he took courage a little; and he arose and went to the place wherein was
279the blessed Justus. And when he saw him afar off, Arianus cast himself down and did obeisance *to him,
280saying: “ What hath befallen thee, O my Master, Lord Justus the General, that thou art come to this place ?”
281The holy Justus said unto him: Ⲓ am sent unto thee that thou mayest torment me as it pleaseth thee and
282afterwards cut off my head. For I and this multitude which followeth me are Christians openly.” When
283Arianus heard this he was greatly encouraged and straightway ordered the executioners to put to death
284the whole multitude.
285After that, he said to the blessed Justus: “Lo, ⲓ have killed all thy servants. Now, if it be thy wish, do
286thou thyself offer sacrifice.” The blessed man said unto him: “The death of my servants is no death; but
2871 have sent them before me to the bridechamber of the Christ.” Arianus said unto him: “Be content with
288these words, and do sacrifice. For lo I feel shame before thee: it is not possible for me to torment thee, neither
289shall 1 be able to neglect the command of my lord the King.”

342“But the blessed man said unto him: “As Jesus the Christ, my true bridegroom, liveth—He Whose General
343I will be from henceforward, inflict on me every torment which pleaseth thee and every form of death, and
344I am ready to endure them by the help of Him Who strengtheneth me, my Lord Jesus the Christ. Only
345fear not at all.”
346Now when Arianus heard this his spirit grew strong within him exceedingly. And straightway he com-
347manded that they should hang him upon the hermetarion and torment him. He caused them to pour pitch upon
348the instruments of torture which they applied to him. After that, he made them lay him down upon the hermie-
349tarion, and bring awls of iron, heated in the fire, and thrust them into his ears, so that the fire entered into his
350whole head. And again, he made them lay bare his privy parts and pour molten lead thereon.
351But the blessed man lifted up his eyes to heaven and said : “ Hear me, my Lord Jesus the Christ ! I suffer even
352unto death. Harken unto me, Thou Who art in the glory of Thy Father; “for Thou art my glory and my might
353and my strength. Send unto me Thy holy Angel, that he may strengthen me in this hour of necessity. For the
354victory is Thine, my Lord Jesus the Christ, together with Thy good Father and the Holy Spirit for ever. Amen.”
355When he had so spoken, he looked towards his right and saw the Savior with Michael on His right hand
356and Gabriel on His left. And the Savior said unto him: “Fear not, Justus My chosen one, but be strong and
357of a good courage. 1 have finished preparing for thee thy throne in the Heavens, and I will set thee. . .in
358the Place of Glory.” And He stretched forth His hand upon his whole body and healed his frame (?). And He
359strengthened him, saying: “ Be not afraid, neither be dismayed at all. For the death of this world is no death
360but life eternal. (I swear by) the. . .head of My Father that since thou hast exiled thyself and suffered shame

496(Two ? folios missing.)
497(The multitudes cried out) *with one voice: “We are Christians openly.” And when Arianus saw them
498following after Justus, he knew that they would not sacrifice.! And straightway he commanded that the
499blessed Justus and all the multitude should be led forth and their heads cut off.
500Forthwith the Savior appeared unto him (sc. Justus) and said unto him: “My true champion, verily thou
501hast contended! I also will cause great marvels to be wrought in the sanctuary wherein they shall lay thy
502body. And after thy death 1 will put it into the heart of a faithful man—Io, he standeth now with a multitude—
503to bury thy body according to thy glory and thy worth. And 1 will cause them to build a great martyrium
504for thee in a little village to south of this city and to lay thy “body therein—and the name of the village
505is Tisi-djereht in P-halé.? And I will cause many mighty works to be performed through thee by means
506of thy body, and in every place wherein thy name shall be uttered. And all men that are sick of any
507sickness or are in any stress, if they shall say in faith, Ⲟ God of the holy Justus, help us,” I will harken
508unto them right soon and pity them, whether they be sick, or in prison, or in peril, or on the sea, or on the
509rivers, or (in danger of) murder, or (of) theft, or in any place, or in any stress: I will grant all their petitions.
510If a woman shall be in pangs of child-birth...”
511(The missing folios contained the conclusion of the promises to Justus and the execution of the Saint and bis
512companions.)
5131 The opening sentences are parallel with the concluding
514sentences of Frag. 5 but follow a slightly different recension.

562*But after these things there came a faithful man, even as the Lord had said unto him (sc. Justus), and
563embalmed his holy body properly and removed it to Tisi-djereht in P-halé. They built a martyrium over
564it, according to his deserving, and placed his holy body therein. For (sic) everyone who was sick with any
565sickness soever, if they worshiped over his body, obtained healing.
566Now we also, O my beloved fathers and brethren—since God hath vouchsafed unto us the gift of his pure
567martyrdom—after this long time let us give glory unto God the Father on the day of his glorious Commemora-
568tion, to the end that he may obtain grace for us in the presence of God, that our sins may be forgiven us

What the layers are

L0 witness
The text as its witness or edition has it, original spelling; its dialect is a description and is never standardized.
L0.5 transliteration
For Egyptian texts: the transliteration with the editors' marks turned into the symbols ° * < > _ ^ (ruled 2026-09-10). For papyri: the edition's Leiden marks as the same symbols, and the editors' readings beside the scribe's as ‹scribe→editors› (ruled PAP-3).
L1 Cairene
Standardized Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar, generated by code from the layer above under the rulings of the project.
L2 Kemetic
The Kemetic alphabet, generated by code from L1.
English
Quoted translations where they exist, credited; otherwise model drafts, marked as drafts.
