1PREFACE
2REPARATIONS for systematic work with a view to a Coptic dictionary were begun
3P- me some thirty years ago, but intervening undertakings delayed effective progress
4for some time. Meanwhile it was sacertained that the Clarendon Press would be not
5unwilling to consider, when the time came, a project of publication. But early in 1914 2
6definite proposal ⲱ publish,’at their expense and with provision of funds for collaboration,
7photography &c., came from the Berlin Academy. This generous offer I owed to Professor
8Erman, who saw the need of a Coptic dictionary on a scale worthy of that of the hieroglyphic
9Wérterbuch and who issued a statement on the subject! A scheme was drawn up and work
10begun? and if the outbreak of war had not put an end to all hopes of carrying through such
11projects, the book would have been completed long ere now. ⲧⲉⲓ it was found possible to
12retain the help of German collaborators, as well as of those in the allied countries, and -
13years after the end of the war a collection of material had been amassed large enough to
14justify a renewal of negotiations with the Clarendon Press. These resulted in the arrange-
15ment whereby the dictionary is now published.
16In 1921 the late Professor Spiegelberg produced his Handworterbuch, which he modestly
17described as a revision of Peyron’s Lexicon (1835), but which in reality is far more than that.
18Its most conspicuous novelty was the addition, in all cases where in the author's opinion
19justifiable, of the hieroglyphic or demotic etymology of the Coptic form. The absence of this
20important element from the present work some students may regret; it was only after much
21hesitation that I decided to omit it. Ⲓ cannot claim sn independent judgement as to the
22appositeness of ⲁ demotic etymology, while to reproduce these in hieroglyphic type—for
23a mere transcription satisfics no one—would greatly have increased costs and yet have added
24nothing of adequate importance to what Spicgelberg has already given us?
25What is here offered represents an entirely new and independent working over of the total
26available material. Our word-collecting has all been done directly, from the texts; all those
27in print have of course been utilized-—often after collation with the originals; so too all
28unpublished manuscripts, ostraca and inscriptions, to which access could be obtained. The
29quantity of material used amounts, at a rough estimate, to some 240,000 slips.* It is hoped
30that these resources give a sufficient basis for a comprehensive view of the language, in all
31its dialects and in all aspects of its literature: biblical, patristic and mundame. The total of
32recorded independent words—ignoring the countless derived forms—is 3,308, whereof some
33390 are still of unknown meaning. These are mostly dwef Acyduna and some are no doubt
34misread.
35If I name here only the principal sources which have become available within recent decades,
36some notion will be possible of the extent to which materials have increased.
37To begin with the largest and, in some ways, the most important of extant collections,
38there are the fifty-six volumes from the Fayydm, bought in ⲓϩⲓ ⲓ by Mr. Pierpont Morgan,
39ⲓⲛ the Sitsungrberichte 1918, 127. 1 may pet ? Much etymological work was done by the late

46vi PREFACE
47a body of texts unparalleled for completeness, if not for variety.! Next in size comes the
48Paris collection : some twenty-five volumes of fragments, the greater part of which has not
49yet attained to print. Then there is a considerable number of leaves in the Borgisn collec-
50tion, which Zoega’s Catalogue merely mentions, the Curzen manuscripts (now the property
51of the British Museum), an interesting series in the Berlin Library and an important and
52varied collection acquired for the University of Michigan.
53So far I have named mostly Sa‘idic MSS., emanating in great part from the library of
54Shenoute’s monastery. Turing now to Bohairic, there is the imposing series, brought long
55since from Nitria to the Vatican, considerable parts of which are not yet in print—con-
56spicuously the volume of Chrysostom, with its thirty-seven complete homilies—and there is
57besides a large number of important texts, chiefly liturgical, scattered among all the libraries:
58service books, hymn books and especially lectionaries, whence interesting variants of the
59received biblical texts may be gathered. The lectionaries were exploited by La Croze and,
60thanks to Dr. Burmester, we shall before long have certain of them available. Last, but by
61no me:ns least, among our Bohainic resources come the vocsbulsries. The fourteenth-century
62Seal of Ab ’I-Bsrakit (transcribed and interpreted by Kircher, but cited here from his MS.
63and a collation of eleven others) of course surpasses the rest in importance ; yet there is
64plenty worth recording in the lesser glossaries also: many an Arabic translation or Greek
65equivalent, to throw light upon rare or doubtful words. It is true that these glossaries ure
66the product of a late age, owing their existence to the disuse that had by then fallen upon
67the ancient language; but I have thought it better, here as elsewhere, to include too much,
68rather than too little, and to record everything from these medieval sources that could be
69claimed as ultimately Coptic.
70As regards the lesser dislects, reference must first be mace to the great increase in material
71resulting from the discovery and gradual publication of the Manichaean papyri, acquired by
72Mr. Chester Beatty and the Berlin Museum. These we have been able to use, thanks to the
73permission of their owners and to copies of the unpublished portions kindly sent by
74Dr. Polotsky and Mr. Allberry. But this advantage has been ours only since resching the
75letter ⲡ and so many would have been the insertions in thc Additions, had we attempted to
76record all new words and forms under the previous letters, that it scemed preferable to ignore
77them almost entirely and to refer students to the indexes of the eventual publications. The
78at present confused idioms included under the term Middle Egyptian, or, as in this book,
79Fayyimic, may later ¢n require special vocabularies, but most of its strange phenomens, 0
80far as yet observed, have found a place here.’
81Finally there is a large body of non-literary texts, which to the earlier lexicographer were
82entirely unknown. In Peyron’s day not a single Coptic ‘document’ was available ; nothing
83of the kind was heard of until the first batch of the jémé papyri began to attract the attention
84of C. W. Goodwin, E. Revillout and M. Kabis, in the sixties and ‘seventies of last century.
85To-day conditions are far different; a great deal of material of this class is now in print:
86ecclesiastical and monastic documents, legal deeds, correspondence—official, commercial and
87purely private—1tax receipts, accounts, lists; besides epigraphic texts: epitaphs, dedicatory
88inscriptions and the like. Further, magical texts of vanous kinds: prayers, incantations,
89curses, charms, whence many a strange, forgotten word may be unearthed. In some of these

97groups there is still plenty of material awaiting publication; nevertheless I think it may be
98claimed that but little—so far as it has been acquired for public or private collections—has
99remained unutilized.
100Something must be said as to the method followed in recording and illustrating words.
101From considerations of space and cost everything is abbreviated down to the limits, it is
102hoped, of intelligibility. For the context of words illustrated an English summary has often
103appeared sufficient. The punctuation and spacing are meant to be taken seriously, the use
104of the semicolon in particular being intended to separate groups in meaning or usage. All
105references are to the most recent cditions of published texts, even where (as in Amélineau’s
106Srhenoudi) the later does not positively improve upon the older print.! Bible verses are given
107in the numeration of the published Coptic editions, without regard either to that of the LXX
108or of the English version. Manuscripts are cited, where possible, by their Coptic pagination ;
109but this rule has been occasionally transgressed, notably in the Vatican series, where the
110modern foliation is followed. Quotations are printed ⲙ they appear in the MSS, their
111orthography uncorrected, except where ambiguity demanded emendation. Irregular variants
112in word-form are enumerated at the outset of each paragraph; at first those most rarely
113occurring were occasionally omitted, later on all were recorded. In the following subdivisions
114the Sa'idic form often does duty for the rest. The gender of a noun is not stated except
115where positive evidence (by article, pronoun or the like) is to be had from the text.
116As the long work progressed its quality has, I hope, improved; but if it were to be done
117again, not a few alterations in method would be desirable. Where a word is rare, it would
118be made clear that the instances given are exhaustive? There would be some indication of
119the relative amounts of material drawn upon for each dialect; our paragraphs are apt to be
120misleading as to that: B is for the most part less fully represented than 5. owing to the far
121greater variety of sources available in the latter. Less ambiguous and contradictory indi-
122cations of dialect ought to have been achieved; & has often been attached to a form found
123in a text otherwise purely Sa‘idic, while S* is used to include, besides forms especially Theban,
124those of more northern and less certain origin. Again, 4 has not been always confined
125to MSS. in that dialect for which the name ‘Siutic' has been proposed.” F of course embraces
126several varieties of idiom: that of the FayyGm and those adjoining it in the river valley,
127whercin divergence from Sa‘idic is often slight; indeed 1 fear that in not a few cases (con-
128spicuously where hybrid texts such as Mor 30 are drawn upon) examples from one and the
129same MS. may be found assigned ⲱ 5 $ and F.* The addition of the dialectal equivalent,
130in literary texts as well as biblical, is perhaps less valuable than at first appeared ; divergence
131in detail between the bible versions—far more frequent than has usually been admitted—
132and still wider differences between the versions, even within a single dialect, of other texts,
133tend to lessen the significance of apparent equivalents. The decision to maintain the terms
134‘transitive’ and ‘intransitive’ would perhaps not commend itself; they are used to distinguish
135between the direct relation of verb and object (‘ accusative’, n=) and the indirect (ⲉ. and
136other prepositions), besides cases of the objectless verb.
137Hlustration must obviously be limited by our collections. A word or form may thus
138appear to be absent in one or other of the dialects which future additions to material will
139supply ; another may recur later on, whereof at present only a single instance has been
140recorded.

147viii PREFACE
148No chronological arrangement of the illustrative quotations would have been feasible ; the
149very nature of Coptic literature and the conservative traditions of its copyists make it im-
150possible to arrive at more than approximate estimates of the relative ages of the literary
151texts—or rather, manuscripts. All that seemed practicable was to begin illustration with
152biblical, i.e. presumably the carlicst, examples and those whereof the Greek originals and
153dialectal parallels give the best guarantees of meaning, and to follow these by quotations
154from the old Gnostic books—the Pistis, the Bruce Papyrus and the Berlin Gnostic text'—and
155next from the one conspicuous native writer whom the literature can boast: Shencute?
156(322-451). Published biblical quotations in the Sa‘idic dialect can generally be traced in
157A. Vaschalde’s indispensable lists (Revue Bibligue 1919-23). Ⲧⲟ what age the mass of litur-
158gical and patristic writings, be they of Egyptian origin or translations from the Greek, belong
159—whether mainly post-Chalcedonian and but rarely earlicr—it would be difficult to determine.
160Non-literary documents are, in the majority, to be assigned to the seventh and eighth
161centuries. Wherever traceable the Greek original or equivalent—for the correspondence
162between them is often of the vaguest—has been added to patristic instances, but space for-
163bade giving the references for these; the reader is asked to credit us with having in no case
164assumed a merely suppositional correspondent. In the biblical examples of common words
165I do not pretend to record exhaustively the Greek equivalents: those which occur but once
166or twice may be found to be absent.
167The book being a dictionary of the Coptic language, the countless Greek words, scattered
168through every class of text, cannot claim inclusion. A very few are given hospitality which
169scem, by formal modification or distortion, to have attzined to naturalization.
170All the articles were written by me and mine of course is the sole responsibility for them.
171The list of Additions and Corrections has grown to a portentous length; the quantity of
172the latter, secing that at least four pairs of eyes had combined to avoid them, is humiliating.
173I can but hope that the list will not go unregarded by users of the book.
174I have to express my gratitude to many friends for contributing in many ways towards the
175progress of the book. Before the organization of the Berlin project, referred to above, I had
176not contemplated extensive collaboration ; but from that date [ set about enlisting the services
177of collaborators and was thus able greatly to add to the body of slip-material which had
178already accumulated. The entire Sa‘idic and Fayylimic and almost all the Achmimic material
179was produced by myself and two friends. To one of these, Sir Herbert Thompson, I am
180indebted for far more than the mere making of slips: for he accepted the burden of reading
181the entire manuscript and has given opinions on many demotic matters, besides undertaking
182the long labour of the Greek index. His never-failing help and criticism have been of in-
183estimable value, pointing the way to many improvements and saving me from countless
184inaccuracies.
185To the other Ⲓ owe a debt for collaboration of every kind, through many years—help
186so extensive, so fundamental and so effective, that I should be quite unable rightly to
187express here how much I owe to it. But for it the work would not have been carried
188through.
189Of the Bohairic material a large part was gathered by the following scholars: Dr. H. Demel,
190Prof. De Vis, Prof. Drioton, Prof. A. Grohmann, the Abbé Porcher, Dr. H. Wiesmann; while

198less extensive contributions were made by the Rev. D. T. Buckle, Sir Stephen Gaselee and
199Mr. E. S. S. Harding.
200Ⲧⲟ Professor yvernat my especial thanks are due, for he entrusted me with photographs
201of the greater part of the Borgian collection! and morevver lent his own photographic copies
202of many of the Pierpunt Morgan manuscripts, while from the Cambridge University Library
203T had the inestimable loan of other volumes of that series. Ⲓ owe a like debt to Prof. Lefort,
204from whom I have constantly borrowed photonraphs [rom the all-embracing collection at
205Louvain. The University of Michigan (thanks in the first instance to the mediation of the
206late Professor Ⲉ. W. Kelsey) generously provided me with photographs of the entire Coptic
207collection? Columbia Univarsity did me a similar kindness at the suggestion of Prof, A. A.
208Schiller. For photographs of certain Vatican MSS. I have to thank Fr. Chaine, others Ⲓ was
209enabled to procure through the liberality of the Griflith Egyptological Fund at Oxford and
210the Hort Fund at Cambridge, while acyuaintance with the Vatican collection was completed
211by the loan of Professor De Vis's copies. Ⲓ have been further indebted to the Hort Fund, ⲱ
212also to the British Academy, for generous financial contributions. Copies of Berlin ostraca
213and of Vienna manuscripts were put at my disposal by the late Prof. Erman and Prof. Till
214respectively, those of manuscripts in Russia by the late O. von Lemm and Prof. P. Jernstcdt.
215To Prof. Erman I owe photographs of the already mentioned Berlin Gnostic papyrus. A find
216of Theban ostraca was, with M. Lacau’s leave, sent to me in Bath by Mr. Winlock, while
217of ostraca fram the Chicago excavations I had the benefit of Prof. Till's copies. 1 have had
218the use of M. de Ricci's MSS. and copies, of those of certain Cairo (Jkéw) pspyri by
219M. Lacau, some of those at Columbia University by Prof. Schiller and of M. Munier's copy
220of an important Shenoute codex in the French Institute, Cairo. After Prof. Dévaud’s death
221Ⲓ was given his invaluable collection of etymological slips. The late Prof. A. A. Bevan,
222Mr. R. Guest and Dr. G. Sobhy have auswered many enquiries respecting obscure Arabic
223equivalents of Coptic words; the late Dr, J. K. Fotheringham gave me help on astronomucal
224questions, the late Mr. R. McKenzie on many Greek points, while Sir D'Arcy Thompeon has
225done the like where natural history was involved. For an Arabic cross-index t0 Kircher's
226Scala 1 have to thank Dr. QT.eary’s kindness.
227Sir Herbert Thompson's Greek index silently rectifies many insccuracics to be met with
228in the book. For the English index I have to thank Mr. Charles Hart-Davis, by whom it
229was almast entirely compiled. Tor the Ambic index Ⲓ am responsible.
230From many others too Ⲓ have had help, either in verifying readings or sending copies of
231distant MSS. or in giving information on special points. [ name those not already referred
232to: Messrs. Bohlig, Ludlow Bull, Burmester, Chassinat, Cerny, Delaporte, Drioton, Farina,

235Worrell, Yasza Abd el-Musih, Mrs. Charlotte Baynes, Dr. Dora Zunz. To all these and to
236others, if inadvertently passed over, I offer my hearty thanks. And I must express them also to
237the University Press: to the Delegates for sharing in the expense of publishing and to the
238compositors and rcaders for the admirable production of a complicated piece of printing.

Run by worker W5 with tools/batch_ocr.py. Work area: ~/Documents/Egypt/Corpus/L0/ocr/Incoming/CRUM_Ocr/ (pages/, hOCR). Known failure: the BOLD headword face is often read as Latin (`anag` for ⲁⲛⲁϩ) — REPORT-W5 §9, REPORT-A3a §6. · accuracy: no CER exists for this book. Measured by eye (REPORT-W5 §6, two dictionary pages): 23 of 26 main entries found, 20 of 23 headword strings exact — not a CER.

What the layers are

L0 witness
The text as its witness or edition has it, original spelling; its dialect is a description and is never standardized.
L0.5 transliteration
For Egyptian texts: the transliteration with the editors' marks turned into the symbols ° * < > _ ^ (ruled 2026-09-10). For papyri: the edition's Leiden marks as the same symbols, and the editors' readings beside the scribe's as ‹scribe→editors› (ruled PAP-3).
L1 Cairene
Standardized Greco-Bohairic spelling and grammar, generated by code from the layer above under the rulings of the project.
L2 Kemetic
The Kemetic alphabet, generated by code from L1.
English
Quoted translations where they exist, credited; otherwise model drafts, marked as drafts.
